What does it take to grow a company from one customer to 100? For Joe Alvarez and Eric Casillas, founders of iCareClean in Montebello, California, the answer is a lot of hard work and a little help from free courses. When Alvarez and Casillas started their commercial cleaning service in 2016, two friends who had known each other since high school got their wish. “It’s always been our dream to start our own company,” Casillas said. Business owners are used to old marketing methods that worked for them in the beginning. They built their customer base based on door knocking and word of mouth referrals. But when the pandemic hit, their marketing plan fell apart. “We had to change our mindset,” said Alvarez. Through a free online course with Small Business Digital Ready, Alvarez learned new ways to market businesses digitally using targeted, location-based strategies for online advertising . “I started doing things outside of my comfort zone,” he said. Alvarez uses tools like account creation and virtual business addresses to help businesses grow throughout Los Angeles. He also changed his social media strategy to promote the pair’s work in the film and television industry, which kept the jobs flowing.

The entrepreneurs used a $10,000 small business grant to help them meet these sales goals, as well as funding for new equipment and employee salaries. Six years after acquiring a customer, iCareClean pays more than $3 million annually. And on a personal note, Alvarez recently bought his first home. There is no blueprint or map on how to run the business successfully,” said Alvarez, who is proud to have seen his business flourish. Small businesses across the country are facing severe economic challenges due to the Covid-19 pandemic. These businesses are the backbone of the local economy, providing essential goods, services and jobs. In this critical time, financial support can make the difference between staying in business or closing for good. Thanks to Verizon, small businesses now have a lifeline.

Early in the crisis, Verizon recognized that small businesses needed help filling the immediate financial gap until operations could resume or other permanent funding was available. The company invested $7.5 million to launch the Verizon Small Business Recovery Fund, which provides $10,000 grants to small businesses, particularly in historically underserved communities affected by the pandemic.

But that’s not all. Verizon’s weekly #PayItForward LIVE series uses some serious star power to raise funds and focus more on small business recovery. The nine-week series features top names in music including Dave Matthews, Usher, Chance the Rapper, Janelle Monáe, Billie Eilish, Alicia Keys and Ryan Tedder; World-class athletes such as Tua Tagovailoa, Saquon Barkley, Weapon Wallace and Tim Penske race car driver; And with giant players like Cizzorz, Nate Hill, and Pokimane, along with hilarious games from Joe Buck, Aisha Tyler, Oliver Hudson, and Lilly Singh.

The numbers are impressive, but the real impact comes from the stories of small businesses that have been able to keep their businesses open thanks to the Verizon Small Business Recovery Fund. A young man who returned to his hometown of Flint to bring the latest water production technology to the communities that need it most; A New Haven woman returning from a trip to Puerto Rico was inspired to open a salsa dance studio; A pair of brothers working to maintain two Honduran family restaurants in Los Angeles. We inspire, educate and continue to attract America’s Main Street entrepreneurs and small business owners who want to be their own bosses and live the American Dream.
