“The main problem is that they don’t have access to money in the center. They don’t know the plan to get there. That’s why we came here,” said Patrick Franklin, the organization’s president and CEO.

The Urban League works with state and federal agencies to help entrepreneurs obtain small business loans.

“Many of our businesses fail because they don’t have enough capital to start their business for six months to a year,” Franklin said. “We’re made up of small businesses that provide jobs. They bring income to the community.”

WISCONSIN STATE JOURNAL: County Executive Joe Parisi released the first draft of his 2021 budget, investing $2 million in economic development centers to support small businesses.

The Black Business Hub is the missing link to transform the Madison County Black business community from diversity to prosperity. The Hub is a true SPACE and an ECOSYSTEM led by earth, black people and COMMUNITY.

The Black Business Hub will be Madison’s business center dedicated to developing, accelerating and connecting Black and other BIPOC businesses. The Hub is a 4-story, 76,000 square foot, commercial and entrepreneurial arts center led by Black business owners and entrepreneurs. The Hub is visible on the Beltline Highway at the southern gateway to downtown Madison and is located in Madison’s oldest and most multicultural neighborhood.

The hub will house retail and other black-owned businesses and other entrepreneurs of color, from startups to established businesses looking to expand and/or occupy retail space for the first time. The hub also includes commercial and retail, including food, personal care, financial services, entertainment, technology, co-working spaces, commercial rental kitchens and many other financial and commercial products. Black Business Hub Accelerator provides business support options including loans, grants, technical assistance, networking and more.

Small Businesses Still Face $28 Billion Of Unforgiven Ppp Loans

Six Guiding Principles for the Hub have been developed by a group of about ten consultants and partners, which the Hub should include in all aspects:

Over the next few years, the Hub will support 100 black-owned businesses and entrepreneurs, create or transfer more than 150 jobs, create at least 250 construction jobs, train black homebuilders and more. Construction of the hub will begin in December 2021 and is expected to be completed by the end of 2022.

According to data from the 2017 American Community Survey, only 39 (.4%) of the 9,755 employers in Dane County with more than one employee are black-owned businesses. The data also show that working-age non-Hispanic whites in Dane County are seven times more likely to be employed than their African American counterparts. A 2015 study by the city of Madison found a similar two-point difference in the percentage of public service providers for racial and ethnic minorities, who make up 15% of the population.
