The City Council approved the scope of the project as part of a strategic partnership with the Inner Valleys United Way. Discussions are now underway on how United Way can manage the program to properly allocate the funds and monitor its proper use. More details, including how to apply, will be released when the program is fully developed.

City council members said the program is especially important because about half of all Americans work in small businesses, studies show. The federal government’s original $350 billion wage protection program expired in two weeks, and only six percent of small businesses received funding. Claims have been made that the program has unfairly benefited large companies.

“Our small business owners employ people, invest and live in our community,” said Mayor Pr Tem Erin Edwards, who co-sponsored the proposal. “I am pleased that we are taking steps to provide this important assistance.” Small businesses play an important role in maintaining a thriving local economy, and people want to do business with people who support their communities.

We all benefit when children succeed in school, families remain employed, and our communities have access to the resources they need to lead healthy lives. That’s why United Way of Kankakee and Iroquois Counties is happy to provide you with an investment opportunity that is good for your business and your community.
