Oxford, Miss. – The Mississippi Small Business Development Center at the University of Mississippi is using a federal grant to expand the center’s support for small businesses and entrepreneurs in rural areas of the state.

Covid 19 Resources For Mississippi And Alabama

A $409,112 distance education and telemedicine grant from the USDA will be used to develop and implement virtual centers throughout Mississippi. Virtual Centers partner with community colleges to provide resources to small business owners and entrepreneurs through the Center’s Rural Development Initiative.

The grant was made possible by a number of factors, including a $75,000 grant from the Regions Foundation, an Alabama-based nonprofit that primarily supports community investment in Regions Bank. The foundation works to advance economic and community development, education and workforce readiness, making MS-SBDC funding a natural fit for the foundation’s grantmaking program.

“We are thrilled to receive this grant and are grateful to the States Fund for matching funds,” said MS-SBDC State Director Sharon Nichols. “These grant funds will give us the opportunity to build the infrastructure for our services, including the purchase of equipment for 27 virtual access centers in rural areas of Mississippi with low population density.

“The centers enable video conferencing so small businesses and entrepreneurs have a safe and confidential place to connect with our services. They also provide virtual connections and resources to underrepresented communities for small business owners and entrepreneurs to strengthen, grow or launch their businesses in rural Mississippi.”

“We are committed to removing barriers to success and are honored to invest in programs that share our goal of creating more inclusive prosperity in our communities,” said Foundation Executive Director Martha Sell.

“This Mississippi Small Business Development Center initiative will give more small business owners the tools they need to succeed. We are excited to see the results that will be produced as part of this initiative.”

Usda Continues To Expand Opportunities And Support To Small Businesses

Before the pandemic, Miller and Nichols began working together to expand the footprint across Mississippi, connecting the center with resources to help small businesses and entrepreneurs get the tools they need to succeed. The pandemic and its impact on small businesses has added urgency to applying for the aid, which Nichols said could be a “game changer.”

“As a nation, equality of opportunity and access to services is important, regardless of where customers are located,” Nichols said. “To address this barrier to Internet access, virtual access centers are located at community colleges and/or human resource centers that provide Internet access and are located in hard-to-serve communities.”

John Maynard, president and CEO of the Oxford-Lafayette Economic Development Foundation, said helping small businesses and entrepreneurs succeed strengthens the local economy as well as the national economy.

The partnership with the MS-SBDC and the States Foundation to help Mississippi’s small businesses and entrepreneurs is another example of how the university supports entrepreneurship and economic growth.

“The university understands the critical role we play in Mississippi’s business and economic development,” said William Nicholas, UM’s director of economic development. “We value our partnership with the States Foundation and the Mississippi Small Business Development Center and look forward to moving our state forward together.”
