December 27, 2020 – Reservations for the new Main Street Small Business Employment Tax Credit are now open! To claim the credit, taxpayers must make a temporary credit reservation between December 1, 2020 and January 15, 2021. The California Department of Taxation and Fees (CDTFA) maintains a reservation where you can apply. The total credit available is $100 million and will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.

The credit can offset sales and use taxes or income and franchise taxes. Taxpayers must make this election as to which tax they will offset when applying for their reservation.

Each taxpayer is eligible for a maximum credit of $100,000. The credit amount is $1,000 per employee increase, as measured by the equivalent of an average full-time monthly employee. The increase is measured by comparing the period from July to November 2020 with the period of April to June 2020.
